About Expeditions
The Expeditions tab in the Data Portal focuses on providing detailed information mainly about German marine research expeditions, offering a comprehensive overview of past, ongoing, and planned scientific voyages. Its main functions typically include:
Expedition Search and Discovery
Users can search for specific past and future expeditions using filters such as expedition name, research vessel, date, geographic region, and associated research missions.
Detailed Expedition Information
Each listed expedition includes detailed metadata, such as:
- The name of the research vessel,
- Principal investigators and participating institutions,
- Objectives and scientific goals of the expedition,
- Geographic coverage, including route maps or key sampling locations,
- Data collected during the expedition.
Access to Expedition Data
Links to datasets collected during specific expeditions are provided, allowing users to explore and download associated research data.
Visualization of routes and Data collected along the routes
Interactive maps or route visualizations show the expedition’s trajectory, sampling sites, and other relevant geographic information. Bathemety data, current velocytydata and other are visualized along the routes. Please see the Viewers tab
Connection to Research Missions
Expeditions are often part of broader research missions or projects. The tab provides links and context connecting expeditions to these larger initiatives, enabling users to see their relevance within a wider scientific framework.
Documentation and Reports
Users may access cruise summary reports, logbooks, and other documentation generated during the expedition, which often provide additional insights into methods, challenges, and preliminary findings.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
By centralizing information about expeditions and their outcomes, the Expeditions tab supports collaboration among scientists from different disciplines who can benefit from shared knowledge and data.
